The one page document that gets your company shortlisted, and how to build one that wins work.
A capability statement is a one page marketing document that tells a government buyer who your company is, what you do, and why you can be trusted to deliver. Think of it as your company resume for the public sector. Contracting officers and prime contractors use it to decide whether to shortlist you for an opportunity or a teaming arrangement.
Buyers are busy and rarely read more than a page. A sharp capability statement gets you into conversations, onto vendor lists, and into teaming discussions. A vague one gets ignored. It is often the first document a buyer requests after a networking event, an industry day, or a sources sought notice.
A strong capability statement usually contains five parts:
| Section | What goes in it |
|---|---|
| Core competencies | A short, scannable list of what you actually do best, in the buyer's language, not generic filler. |
| Differentiators | Why you, not a competitor. Certifications, cleared staff, proprietary methods, speed, or niche expertise. |
| Past performance | A few relevant contracts with the agency, scope, value, and outcome. Proof you have done this before. |
| Company data | Legal name, UEI, CAGE code, NAICS and PSC codes, set aside status, DUNS is retired so do not list it. |
| Contact information | A named point of contact, email, phone, website, and physical location. |
Keep it to a single page, well organized, and easy to skim. Use your logo and brand, but do not let design crowd out substance. Tailor the core competencies and past performance to the agency or opportunity you are targeting rather than sending one generic version to everyone.
Upload your capability statement when you build your Master Profile, and BidBuster reads it to auto fill your company details, codes, and past performance. That same profile then flows into every submission form, so the work you put into your statement pays off on every bid.
